7 Ways to Get Rid of Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine is a powerful drug. Perhaps one of the most powerful anyone can ever get addicted to. The second it is consumed, the chemicals take over the brain. The body is filled with feel-good dopamine. As soon as that dopamine level drops, there is a craving for it to come back. In turn, the desire for cocaine comes back.

Admitting that there is an addiction and realizing that it needs to be stopped is the first step to curbing it. That doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy though. Quitting cocaine can be extremely difficult and not always possible without professional help. However, several actions can be taken to get rid of cocaine addiction once and for all. That’s provided the user is committed to making the change.

Rehab for Kicking Cocaine

A drug addict might think that they are strong enough to kick the habit on their own, but it’s not always a possibility. Quitting cocaine at home can actually be dangerous if the withdrawal symptoms are severe enough. Any of the following are considered signs of addiction withdrawal:

  • Nasal congestion
  • Disoriented speech
  • Weight loss and a decrease in appetite
  • Dilated pupils
  • Restlessness
  • Mood changes
  • Increased heart rate

Each of these can be monitored by a medical professional if an addict decides to go into a rehab treatment facility. In most instances it involves at minimum a 30 in-house treatment program. Depending on the severity of the addiction, it could go on much longer than that. While in treatment users will have access to all the professionals necessary to assist with physical, psychological, and emotional issues that are related to their chemical dependency.

There is also an opportunity to uncover why that person decided to turn to cocaine in the first place. For most, there are underlying reasons why drugs were considered an option. It could be to escape something that happened in the past or to run away from an existing issue in their lives.

Out Patient Therapy

Getting therapy from medical professionals in an outpatient setting can also be successful. The user will still have all the access to the medical team that he or she would have in rehab. However, things are a little bit more difficult going this route because they still have to make the right decisions about not using when they leave the building.

Prescription Medication for Cocaine Addiction

There haven’t been any specific pharmaceutical medications cleared by the FDA for cocaine addiction as of right now. Some drugs have been proven effective for treating withdrawal symptoms however which can make quitting a little bit easier. They aid in side effects like nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. Doctors may prescribe topiramate, modafinil, or gabapentin to patients dealing with cocaine addiction. They should always be used in conjunction with behavior medication and other therapy.

Getting Rid of Cocaine Addiction From Home

If for some reason a rehab or treatment center isn’t an option, some things can be done at home. While in most situations it isn’t going to be enough to call it quits for good, they can alleviate the cravings and desire to use again.

Exercising Regularly

By hitting the gym or going for a run, there can be a reduction in withdrawal symptoms. Mood is also boosted, and self-confidence is gained with the feeling of doing something good for the body.

 A Full Schedule

Working, going to meetings, planning vacations, learning something new, or anything else that can keep the mind and body occupied is going to help in keeping cocaine at bay. If there is a constant need to complete the things that are written down on a schedule, there isn’t time for drug use. Make sure that these activities are all done with someone that isn’t using and can be trusted, otherwise there is going to be a stronger likelihood for relapse.

Get Prepared for What’s to Come

Regardless of how much a user thinks he or she can quit on their own without any negative side effects or withdrawal symptoms setting in, it’s going to happen. Depression is a big one that often leads people back to drugs. Instead, it’s better to be prepared by planning things to will keep the mind happy. A sleepover with funny movies and a good friend is always a good option. Keep the mood light and entertaining to prevent depression from fully setting in.

Talk to Friends and Family

Again, this should be done with friends and family members that aren’t users of any chemical drug or alcohol, or it’s going to be hard to believe what they are saying. Users need to go over their feelings and let out any concerns that they are having about quitting cocaine. Sometimes saying it out loud will give a better understanding to the person about why drugs are harmful to them and how they are inhibiting them from living their best life.
