The majority of passenger trains today rely on compressed air for proper functioning. Several components in a train rely on compressed air – doors, brakes and suspension. A reliable compressed air system is responsible for correct door functioning, fluid brake execution and a smooth train ride. In order to produce clean, compressed air, railway compressors must be very resilient to harsh conditions such as dust, debris, heat, humidity and vibrations. Because of the millions who commute by train, a consistent supply of compressed air is necessary to stick to a demanding travel schedule. 

The Importance of Compressed Air System Design

Compressed air is produced via a complicated packaged air system. When designing an air compressor system, the manufacturer needs to consider many factors including vibration severity, noise, humidity, debris potential, car builder and transit authority specifications. Because of the numerous variables that surround the proper functioning of an air system, such as maintenance and parts delivery, high-touch compressed air service is necessary. 

Maintenance of Compressed Air Systems is Crucial 

If impurities enter the compressed air system, they can slow down the overall functioning of the brakes, doors and suspension in a rail train. When dirt and moisture enter a compressor, the oil composition changes and lubrication becomes compromised. Without proper lubrication, a compressor cannot function properly and thus compressed air cannot be delivered appropriately to allow for a smooth ride. Continual maintenance is essential in order to prevent irreversible damage.
