Many areas in the world today have mandated the use of a face mask to hinder the spread of the COVID-19 virus. There are several steps you must accomplish to ensure that you are wearing the covering properly to protect yourself and others from getting sick. Here are a few tips for using and cleaning your masks correctly during this pandemic.
How To Wear a Mask
Research the different styles of masks available to you to determine which will be the most comfortable. Be sure that the one you choose, whether it is a cloth mask or an N95 respirator mask, has adequate protection to keep you safe. Cloth masks should have two layers in the construction.
Wash your hands before you put your mask on and after you take it off. If yours has loops to go around your ears, slide the elastic behind one ear until it is secure. Stretch the mask across your face and do the same with your opposite ear. If your mask has ties, knot them tightly to your head to keep it in place. Pull a gaiter over your head until it is around your neck; then pull the top over your face. Whichever style you choose, it must cover your nose and mouth to be effective. Lay the top of the mask over the bridge of your nose and the bottom below your mouth near your chin.
How To Care for Your Mask
Throw out a disposable mask as soon as you are finished with it. Find another to use if you need it and avoid reusing it if possible. If you purchase a washable mask, read the instructions on how to care for it before you put it in the washing machine. Cloth masks, especially if they are sewn, can be put in the washer with the rest of your laundry. You can also transfer it to the dryer when it is time.
