Beginner’s Guide to Using Essential Oils

Some people who aren’t well-versed in essential oils think that they’re just a bunch of hype, the new fad in health, but essential oils are not a new thing. They have been used for thousands of years and are proven to actually work. It just happens that people today are becoming more aware of them, and it was the same throughout history, with there sometimes being large gaps of time in certain regions where essential oils weren’t widely known or talked about and knowledge was patchy.

Today they’re once again being recognized and appreciated as practical tools. Perhaps even as important components for our health, just as eating healthy or frequent exercise is.

There is still a lot we don’t’ know about them, but there are studies being done continually to analyze the nature of essential oils and how they can be used. These studies will hopefully teach us a lot more about these complex oils.

Starting out can be a little bit overwhelming to the beginner due to the extensive amount of information there is to be found about essential oils. So to start with, there is a lot of controversy surrounded around essential oils. For the most part, there is a lot of disagreement on the usage because of the inherent strength and subsequent possible dangers of essential oils if they are used wrongly.

This doesn’t mean that essential oils shouldn’t be used; on the contrary, they’re powerful assets and their growing popularity is a testament to that. It’s just a good idea to exercise some caution and do your homework before making any rash decisions.

This is especially true when discussing whether or not it is safe to ingest essential oils. Some people will say it’s fine, some will say it’s okay to a certain extent and others will say that under no circumstances should you ingest them. The truth of the matter is that essential oils are complex and much more powerful than most people give them credit for.

Should You Ingest Essential Oils?

We don’t know near enough about them at the present time to say for certain whether or not it’s safe to ingest them. They can be as powerful as pharmaceuticals, which are adequately studied and tested for years before they’re deemed safe. There just hasn’t been enough research done with essential oils to know how they could affect our bodies internally. The biggest concern is the effect oils could have on our gut flora, which is immensely delicate.

This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t ingest essential oils – whether you ingest them or not is something that only you can decide. There is a lot to take into consideration, though, and you should be very careful about it. A lot of sources on the internet are far too nonchalant about adding oils to beverages and foods for a quick fix to ailments. That causes a lot of people to feel that they’re safe to take internally, and as a result, many people are not taking necessary precautions.

Maybe you’d love to have a huge array of different oils to choose from, but you find them to be too expensive to buy very much of. Well, there are some oils that are really multi-purposeful so if you had to only choose five, they would be five good choices to make. You could use just these five oils for a variety of different purposes.

  • Tea Tree: This is another one that would be good to always have in your medicine cabinet. It has many different topical uses, such as a treatment for eczema, psoriasis, various types of fungal infections, acne, dandruff and insect bites.
  • Frankincense: This is a very popular oil that was even mentioned in the bible as one of the gifts that the three wise men gave to Christ. It can reduce stress, anxiety and depression; prevent acne and heal cuts. In addition, scientists are looking into it as a possible cure for cancer!
  • Peppermint(Oil Diffuser Amazon): Peppermint has long been known as a cough medicine so it’s no surprise that rubbing some on the skin of your throat and chest can help with a cough. Great for eliminating odors, alleviating stomach cramps and warding off insects as well.
  • Oregano: It’s even more powerful than your average essential oil so make sure you dilute it well. It can be used as an antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. It can also drive off insects and can have a calming effect on the mind and emotions.
